Leukaemia Research Appeal For Wales

LRAW supports a wide variety of projects. sometimes we are the only sponsors, other times we help out when money from other sources, including other leukaemia or cancer charities falls short. Our resources are very limited compared with the larger charities, but we do ensure that on average 95% of what we raise is available for funding (for large charities this is often around 80%).

In recent years we have concentrated on supporting new researchers: we want to ensure there is growing interest in this research area and plenty of new ideas. And we want to maintain Wales as a leading research and treatment hub.

2013 - 2014

PhD student Rosaria is expected to complete her lab work by Easter this year, while Sophie Betteridge passed her PhD viva shortly before Christmas and has just a few minor corrections to complete.

Two new PhD students started on myeloma projects at the Institute of Cancer & Genetics, School of Medicine, Cardiff University (Heath Hospital). Sam Hyatt is working under Prof Duncan Baird on the telomere myeloma project ('the role of telomere dysfunction in multiple myeloma') and Melanie Boyd is working under Dr Paul Brennan and Prof Chris Pepper ('Developing novel agents for targeting multiple myeloma').

In 2013 we granted funding to Prof Chris Pepper to generate a circulating model system of CLL. Prof Pepper updated us recently to say:

'We now have that up and running and Beth (one of my post docs) is writing the first paper up describing the model (picture attached). She presented her findings at the British Society for Haematology this year and her data caused real interest... Its fair to say that the data she has generated are incredibly interesting and [we] are very excited about the direction of this work.

Particularly so as the new (very effective) drugs for the treatment of CLL appear to work by flushing out cells from the lymph nodes. Our system will allow us to work out exactly how this is being achieved so thank you! I appreciate how much support you have given us and indeed how much you have committed to us in the future.'
